The Journey of Metro Health Specialists Hospital Inc.

In 2011, several doctors envisioned to establish a multi-specialty clinic that would cater to almost all types of patients requiring various services including consultation, diagnostic examinations and other special services. The plan was to create a comprehensive and unified health care services that will serve as a one-stop- shop clinic that will be feasible in the current economic and geographical scenario of the province then. Inspired by the vast experiences in their training years, both locally and internationally, and empowered by the knowledge and expertise in their own specialties and sub-specialties, these doctors courageously committed themselves in the task. Thus, Metro Health Multispecialty Clinic and Laboratory officially opened in June 28, 2011. The word Metro Health was coined from the word Metro which means city and health. Thus, Metro Health is simply defined as health services in the heart of Sorsogon City accessible to all the different towns of the province. The ambitious tagline was “towards excellent care”.

At the outset, the clinic offered consultations with different specialties that included family medicine, internal medicine, gastroenterology, pulmonology, nephrology, dermatology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, general surgery, orthopedics, general dentistry, orthodontics and physical therapy. To complement the services, an up-to-date laboratory was put in place. At that time, the response of the nearby communities in the different towns was overwhelming. This necessitated the clinic to expand to accommodate more and more patients in less than a year. The unprecedented expansion temporarily resolved the daily congestion inside the clinic caused by the great influx of patients.

In 2015, with the vibrant leadership of the board of directors and the glaring necessity for a bigger place, a new building was created and later on attached to the existing one. This time, hemodialysis and radiology were added to the roster of services.

Having realized the growing patronage of the community and the increasing demand for better health facility, Metro Health decided to build a hospital to serve patients requiring inpatient services. Metro Health Specialists Hospital was conceived after comprehensive review and thorough brainstorming. The first groundbreaking was held in July 18, 2017.

Metro Health Specialists Hospital shall be the official name of the facility. It is built for all patients regardless of age, ancestry, color, culture, disability (physical or Intellectual), gender, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. The main goal is to provide excellent health care to every patient within the scope of the available expertise. Metro Health shall continue to innovate and recreate itself to serve as many patients as possible. It is envisioned to be a progressive organization that will continuously and promptly respond to the growing health needs of the community. The hospital shall strive to bring a totally new experience in the delivery system of quality and affordable health care with patient at the core of every endeavor.

Metro Health Specialists Hospital, Inc. (MHSHI) is a Level 2 hospital compliant to the Department of Health’s (DOH) standards for hospital facilities. Being so, it has the required five (5) medical departments including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Anesthesia and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Aside from these departments, MHSHI boasts of the availability of special areas such as intensive care units for both neonatal and adult patients, respiratory unit, rehabilitation medicine and physical therapy, hemodialysis, operating room complex, post-anesthesia care unit, cardiology unit, neurology unit, dental unit, oncology unit and pain management unit.
